Frequently asked questions

Answers about who we are, how donations are used, and how our cleanup work is measured and verified.

About the organization

What is 4ocean Foundation?
4ocean Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that funds professional cleanup crews to remove plastic from the ocean, rivers, and coastlines. Our work is powered by donations, and every pound we remove is verified, GPS-logged, and publicly reported.
How is 4ocean Foundation different from 4ocean PBC?
4ocean PBC is a public benefit company that funds cleanup through the sale of products. 4ocean Foundation is a separate nonprofit, funded by donations, grants, and partnerships. The two organizations share a mission, but the Foundation operates independently with its own board and financials.
Where does 4ocean Foundation operate?
Our operations are currently based in Bali, Indonesia — at the heart of the Coral Triangle. Our crews work across rivers, coastlines, and offshore, with a river boom network in Jembrana and Denpasar that intercepts plastic before it reaches the sea.
What happens to the plastic after it's collected?
Collected material is weighed, logged, and sorted by type. Wherever possible it is recycled or repurposed through local partners; the remainder is disposed of responsibly. We report totals in our monthly impact snapshots.
Why collect plastic on land and in rivers, not just the open ocean?
Most ocean plastic starts on land and travels to the sea through rivers. Catching it at river outflows and on coastlines — before it disperses and breaks down into microplastics — is one of the most efficient ways to keep it out of the ocean.

Donations

Is my donation tax-deductible?
4ocean Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 88-2694307). Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law, and you will receive a receipt by email for your records.
How is my donation used?
Donations fund cleanup operations directly — crews, vessels, boom maintenance, and the equipment needed to collect and verify every pound. We publish our financials so you can see exactly how funds are allocated.
Can I set up a monthly donation?
Yes. Choose "Monthly" on the donation form to give on a recurring basis. You can update or cancel your monthly gift at any time by contacting our team.
Can I give in honor or memory of someone?
Yes. You can dedicate a gift during checkout, and we can send a notification to the person or family you choose.

Cleanups & impact

How do you verify the plastic you remove?
Every cleanup is weighed on site, photographed, and GPS-logged by our crews. Figures are reviewed by our operations team before they are published in our monthly impact reports.
How often is impact data updated?
We publish a verified impact snapshot every month, covering pounds removed, cleanups completed, and the running total since our program began in 2025.
What is a "bottles equivalent"?
It translates the total weight of plastic removed into the number of standard plastic water bottles of the same weight — a way to make large numbers easier to picture.
